Building Southern Humboldt's first indoor sports comlex

The Southern Humboldt Community Sports & Wellness Facility is a once‑in‑a‑generation project designed to give our rural region something it has never had: a safe, year‑round indoor home for youth sports, fitness, culture, and community connection.

For decades, Southern Humboldt families have gone without a gym. No indoor court. No winter practice space. No place for youth to train, adults to stay active, or Elders to gather. SHYSA is changing that.

In partnership with the Eel River Wailaki Tribe, we are building a facility rooted in culture, community, and opportunity. The Tribe will co‑design cultural elements, youth and Elder programs, and a museum feature that honors Wailaki history and identity. A dedicated Tribal office inside the facility ensures long‑term visibility, leadership, and shared stewardship.

The new facility will include:

  • A full‑size indoor basketball and multi‑sport court

  • Fitness and wellness space for youth, adults, and Elders

  • Youth development and after‑school program rooms

  • A cultural museum feature led by the Eel River Wailaki Tribe

  • Community gathering and event space

  • Safe parking and fire‑safe access

This project is more than a building — it’s a commitment to our youth and our future. It creates a place where kids can grow strong, families can stay healthy, and the community can come together in ways Southern Humboldt has never had before.

With support from local partners, Tribal leadership, county officials, and community members, SHYSA is moving this project forward through architectural design, CEQA environmental review, and cultural integration. Each step brings us closer to breaking ground on a facility that will serve generations.

Together, we are building a home for sports, wellness, culture, and community — right here in Southern Humboldt.
